But trust me, once you break it down, it's totally manageable. The new Digital SAT has changed some things, but the core strategy for a high score is still the same.

What's the Deal with the Digital SAT? A Quick Breakdown.

The Digital SAT is a new, shorter, and adaptive version of the old paper test. Here's what you need to know about the basics:

What Does it Cost?

The base fee is $60. Be warned, though: late registration or changing your test date will add to that cost. You get a few free score reports with your registration, but extra ones cost money. If you're eligible for a fee waiver, definitely apply for one through the College Board. It can save you a lot of money.

How Long Is the Exam?

The new Digital SAT is a lot shorter than the old one. The entire exam, including breaks, takes just over 2 hours. This is a huge change from the 3+ hour paper test and means you need to be sharp and focused for a shorter, more intense period.

What Are the New Sections Like?

The biggest change is the structure. The Digital SAT is adaptive, meaning your performance in the first module of each section determines the difficulty of the second module.

· Reading & Writing: You get two modules for this section. The questions are a mix of short passages and standalone grammar questions. You’ll have about 64 minutes for this whole section.

· Math: Like R&W, this is also split into two modules. The questions cover algebra, geometry, and data analysis. You'll have 70 minutes for the entire math section. And here's a bonus: a Desmos graphing calculator is built right into the test platform and is available for the entire section.

My Game Plan for a High Score

Knowing the logistics is just the beginning. The real work is in the prep. Here’s a three-step strategy I used that you can steal:

Step 1: Set a Target Score (and Find Your Starting Point)

Don’t just say, "I want a good score." Be specific. Take a full-length official practice test on the Bluebook app to get a baseline score. Then, look up the average scores for the colleges you're interested in. Your target should be slightly higher than the 75th percentile of those schools. This gives you a clear goal to work toward.

Step 2: Master the Adaptive Format

Since the test is adaptive, a top score means you have to crush the first module of both sections. This is non-negotiable.

· Reading & Writing: Focus on getting as many questions right as possible in the first module. This unlocks the harder second module, which is a must for a top score.

· Math: The same logic applies here. Practice a wide range of questions to ensure you're strong across the board in the first module, so you can tackle the hard module and earn those extra points.

Step 3: Treat Practice Tests Like the Real Thing

This is the most underrated tip. You can't simulate the test day environment by casually doing practice questions.

· Set a timer: Take your practice tests in one sitting, with the same breaks as the real test.

· Use the official tools: Get familiar with the Bluebook app's interface, the built-in calculator, and the reference sheet. You don't want to waste time fumbling with these on test day.

· Analyze your mistakes: After each test, don't just look at your score. Go back and review every single question you got wrong or were unsure about. Understand the "why" behind your mistakes and add those concepts to your study plan.
